TUSCALOOSA COUNTY, AL (WBRC)- Governor Robert Bentley on Monday appointed veteran law enforcement officer Billy Sharp to serve as interim sheriff of Tuscaloosa County.
Sharp replaces Sheriff Ted Sexton, who recently announced he would retire as sheriff in order to assume a new appointment with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office in California.
"Billy Sharp has a tremendous amount of experience in the field of law enforcement," Governor Bentley said. "Sharp's background in law enforcement will be a great asset to the people of Tuscaloosa County."
According to a news release from the governor's office, Sharp will serve as the county's sheriff while the Governor's Office takes the time needed to continue conducting thorough interviews for the position.
The governor's office says Sharp has served in law enforcement positions for more than 30 years. He most recently joined the Tuscaloosa County Metro Homicide Unit to help solve cold cases after retiring from the Alabama Criminal Justice Center in February 2012.
