Northport residents upset over plans to expand landfill | News
NORTHPORT, AL (WBRC)- A group of neighbors in Northport are upset over plans to expand a landfill behind their properties.
After a city council meeting Monday, they expressed their concerns with state Rep. Alan Harper. In March 2012 the Black Warrior Solid Waste Authority bought 153 acres on the west side of the city from the Department of Mental Health. They plan to use part of the land to expand the landfill but Harper and some nearby homeowners say, "Not so fast!"
"Our concerns are varied. This was done without transparency. This does affect the adjacent property owners, their property values," Harper said.
"Nobody knew about it until it was a done deal and we didn't have a hcance to voice our opinons. I just think, before something like that happens the community needs to know about it," resident Ray Bigham said.
No one from the solid waste authority was at Monday's meeting. Harper and other residents plan to attend a meeting Oct. 18 at noon at the company.
