Commission approves safe rooms for Tuscaloosa County employees

TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC)- The Tuscaloosa County Commission has approved funding to provide six tornado safe rooms in county buildings.

A grant will reimburse the county about 75 percent of the $30,000 cost to build the safe rooms.

The tornado sheds are built to hold only around 15 people and will not be for public use. The safe rooms will provide shelter specifically for county employees who would act as first responders or clean up crews in the event of another tornado in Tuscaloosa County.

Neighbors react to Tuscaloosa murder

Accused killer Tracey Grissom bonded out of Tuscaloosa County Jail Tuesday. That's a few hours after she allegedly gunned down her ex-husband Hunter Grissom.

She wasn't at home today. Court documents list her home in the 2000 block of Oak Village Road in Akron. That's a small town in Hale County.

We traveled there today. Neighbors recall seeing her, two children and another man in a home there for the past three months, fixing up the place. Folks there like Billy Campbell and Hayward Martin recognized her from arrest photos. But they say they can't judge her without knowing her personally.

Bo Bikes Bama holds online silent auction

Bo Jackson's fundraising efforts for tornado relief didn't end when he crossed the finish line of a 300 mile charity ride in Tuscaloosa. An online silent auction that continues through 9 p.m. is raising more money for the Alabama Governor's Emergency Relief Fund.

Bo Jackson's five-day charity ride took him from north Alabama at Lake Guntersville State Park through other tornado-ravaged areas of the state, including Cullman, Jasper and Bessemer before ending in Tuscaloosa.

The Bo Bikes Bama campaign had a goal of raising $1 million and is currently more than halfway to that mark with $503,813. The online silent auction offers all five of Bo's custom-made TREK bikes, signed sports memorabilia, vacation packages, artwork and more. So far, the highest bid is around $800 for a Bo Bikes Bama jersey signed and worn by Lance Armstrong.
